Virginia Warren, Board Chair
Virginia Warren serves as the Office Chief of the Cancer Prevention and Control Programs at the Arizona Department of Health Services. Virginia is responsible for providing Arizona’s communities with services in the areas of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening and executing collaborative statewide planning to reduce Arizona’s cancer burden. Virginia is a recent recipient of the 2014 CDC Carol Friedman Award for Extraordinary Leadership and Exemplary Mentorship in Comprehensive Cancer Control. In 2015 she was awarded the Colon Cancer Alliance’s Visionary Sapphire Award. In April of 2016 she received Komen Arizona’s Joyce Gooding Spirit of Komen Award.
Virginia earned her Masters of Public Administration degree from the University of Arizona. The focal points of her course work included health administration, health economics, and finance. During her thirty-year health care career, Virginia has served Arizona residents in hospitals, managed care settings, academic clinics, federally qualified community health centers, and the state department of health.
Her interests outside of the workplace include walking, cooking, and reading in addition to spending as much time as possible with her three adult sons and her granddaughter.
Mindy Griffith, Board President
Prior to accepting the role of Executive Director, Mindy Griffith, M.Ed worked as a Program Coordinator at the University of Arizona, an elementary school teacher and a school administrator. Mindy has been engaged with a number of non-profits in volunteer, board and leadership roles, having served as President of both the Junior League of Tucson and St. Luke’s Home, an assisted-living community for low-income elders built on health and wellness. Mindy recently completed the Greater Tucson Leadership Class which uses a nationally recognized leadership curriculum, Positive Leadership. Mindy’s family has been touched by cancer and she is eager to ensure people have the tools they need to navigate their journey and Fight the Fear of cancer. In her free time Mindy enjoys traveling, volunteering, reading and scrapbooking.
Dr. Donald Brooks, Founding Member
Dr. Brooks specializes in Hematology and Oncology at Arizona Oncology Associates. Prior to joining Arizona Oncology Associates, Dr. Brooks served as Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Arizona Health Science Center in Tucson. He continues to serve the Center as a private practice and clinical assistant professor. Dr. Brooks is a member of the American College of Physicians; American Medical Association; American Association for Cancer Research; American Society of Clinical Oncology; and the Arizona Clinical Oncology Society. During his free time, Dr. Brooks enjoys spending time with his family, camping, and hiking.
Emily Carlson, Board Secretary
Emily Carlson has served as the Operations Manager for the Cancer Prevention and Control Programs at the Arizona Department of Health Services since July 2013. In this position, Emily manages the CDC- and state-funded Well Woman HealthCheck Program which provides breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services for approximately 7,000 uninsured, low-income Arizona residents. Recently, Emily has acquired the responsibilities of coordinating the Arizona Comprehensive Cancer Control Program and supporting the work of the statewide Arizona Cancer Coalition.
In 2013, Emily received her Master of Public Health degree specializing in Social and Behavioral Health from the University of Nevada, Reno. Emily’s contract work with the Nevada Department of Health & Human Services in 2012 prompted her master’s degree project that explored access to health care and health information among Nevada’s youth. In her free time, Emily enjoys traveling, yoga and swimming, and trying new recipes.
Dr. Rodgers Wilson
Dr. Wilson is an executive at a major healthplan and is the former Chief Medical Officer of the Arizona Department of Behavioral Health. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Forensic and Adult Psychiatry, in administration and management by the American Psychiatric Association. He is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. As a psychiatrist, Dr. Wilson has a keen interest in and has worked with Providers on physical and behavioral health integration within primary care. He has expertise in adolescent psychiatry, transcultural medicine, workplace violence, and forensic psychiatry. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law, American Board of Utilization Review and Quality Assurance Physicians, Arizona Medical Board, and the Arizona Psychiatric Association. Dr. Wilson is a children’s book author and a professional screenwriter. He enjoys Cajun/creole cooking, traveling and desert hiking.
