Tucson Mah Jongg

Juddy Kidder and Carolyn Sanger

Judy Kidder and Carolyn Sanger, the two founders of the annual BAG IT! Tucson Mah Jonng  event  have remarkably different histories revolving around cancer.

Judy’s maternal grandmother, her mother and all of her mother’s sisters died from cancer.  Carolyn, however, is the first person in her family ever diagnosed with cancer, going back at least three generations on both maternal and paternal sides.  Carolyn had first read about BAG IT in the Arizona Daily Star when she first moved to Tucson in 2003 … and kept thinking she should get involved somehow.

Judy’s husband received a BAG IT bag from his oncologist when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008.

Judy’s and Carolyn’s  paths crossed  and the idea was born to combine their mutual love of Mah Jongg with their desire to improve the lives of those recently diagnosed with cancer.  BAG IT was their most logical choice!

What better way to help raise funds for and awareness of BAG IT than a day doing what we and so many others love?  Play Mah Jongg in the morning, stop for a delicious lunch in a very beautiful setting at Skyline Country Club, and the back to a few more hours of Mah Jongg.  Participants come with their own table(s) of players or come along or with a friend and are matched with players of comparable skill and experience — from beginners to mavens.  There are no winners or losers, just a day of intense fun and fellowship for a remarkably good cause!

GREEN VALLEY HOSTS ANNUAL MAH JONNG TOURNAMENT FOR BAG IT!

On October 23, 2010, a group of friends of BAG IT in Green Valley gathered for their annual MahJongg Tournament to support BAG IT.

BAG IT volunteer and tournament organizer, Joy Hughes, shares her comments:

“Each team is composed of friends who enjoy playing this fun and challenging game for a very worthwhile cause.  Just about all of the participants have had cancer or loved ones with cancer (but that is not a pre-requisite to play!)  We all believe in the good work of BAG IT and that’s the sole reason we join together each year to share our common goal to support newly-diagnosed cancer patients.  It is very much a privilege and pleasure.”

Join them for their next tournament on Saturday, October 22, 2011.  $20/person donation
